Opening Duties (First LG on Duty)

  • Collect the trauma bag from security at the front gate

  • Ensure that high tower is deep end center and low tower is mid pool

  • Put trauma bag on the hook underneath high tower and put a dry towel on top

  • Bring spinal board in back shed to pool and lay on back of high tower

  • Lifeguard binder brought out from the back shed

  • Umbrellas brought out from back shed and put on each lifeguard tower

  • Daily safety check (in binder) done daily to ensure pool is safe

During your shift

  • Daily number every 30 minutes (# of people in the pools / # of people in the entire facility)

  • No children in the Jacuzzi AT ALL unless over 14 years–feet cannot even be dipped in the pool

  • Parents must be by their small children at all times. If kids are swimming on one side of the pool parents must be close (i.e. parents cannot be at the bar while small children in pool)

  • No toys allowed in pool area or pool unless for camp or swim lesson, this is flexible and at your disgression as long as no one else is in the pool area to be bothered by toys.

  • Always remember to greet all members that walk in. Be very polite and give them a smile!

The club can decide at any time, that any lifeguard is not a good fit for their facility, in which case we will have to switch you to a different contract. This is why it is so important to follow all of the guidelines AND be personable while at each facility.

  • Talk to other lifeguards for more than 5 minutes at a time (If you are talking to another lifeguard or a member always be sure to face the pool and continue to scan. Be sure to still enforce all rules.)

  • Use any of the member facilities, including lounge chairs, bar food, and jacuzzi.

  • Leave any of the doors propped open for any amount of time.

  • Have your phone out while in the pool area.

Closing Duties

  • Put the umbrellas, spine board, and binder back into the back shed.

  • Bring trauma bag without towel back to front gate security.

  • Tell any remaining members that there will be no lifeguard on duty.

  • Make sure you clean up after yourself and the area around lifeguard stations.

  • The last 5 minutes of your shift, enter in all daily numbers into your phone.

**The only time the lily pad is out is Thursdays from exactly 5:30pm-7:30pm, during camp on Fridays between 3:30pm-5:30pm, and Sundays  3:30-5:30pm, there MUST be a lifeguard in the water when the lily pad is to enforce the rules and ensure safety.

If someone asks to bring the lily pad out please let him or her know the hours. Tell them that for insurance and safety purposes the lily pad can only come out at these times.

  • Lily pad must be ties to the handrails in the deep end of the pool (side opposite from the lap lane)

  • Lifeguard must keep the lily pad away from all sides of the pool at all times

  • No swimming under the lily pad

  • No rough housing on the lily pad

  • All other safety rules lifeguards would otherwise be enforcing
